The Hertie Foundation |
 | | The Hertie Foundation carries on the life's work of Georg Karg, owner of the Hertie department store. Founded in 1974, the Hertie Foundation is one of today's largest foundations in Germany, with assets to the order of over 800 million € and an average annual sponsoring outlay between 20 and 30 million €.
In its field of focus, which embraces the Neurosciences, European Integration and Learning Democracy, the Foundation seeks to sound out new solutions and help towards their practical implementation. The Foundation sees itself as initiator, actuating and triggering off a dynamic process that subsequently allows the sponsored project to unfold and develop on its own. | | | | | | | | The Neurosciences The brain is the most fascinating organ in the human body. The Hertie Foundation is devoted to enhancing our understanding of the brain and how it functions, providing practical insights which can be applied to combating the wide range of diseases afflicting it. Almost every year since 2000, the Foundation has contributed to this cause in excess of 10 million. It aims to pioneer new fields and develop new approaches to the organization of formal structures in the field of Neurological Research. MS Research and MS Patient Assistance focus on the neurological disease multiple sclerosis, while the Exchange of Ideas is aimed at fostering communication between neuroscientists and the wider community.

| | European Integration There are a multitude of projects in which the Hertie Foundation makes its own unbureaucratic contribution towards the process of European integration. The major focus of its work lies in overcoming national and disciplinary boundaries. It sponsors projects that initiate necessary reforms in step with the process of change at the heart of Europe. The Foundation′s projects take explicit account of the special role and responsibility of Germany in uniting Europe. The Foundation gives particular assistance to integrating the countries from Central and Eastern Europe and places specific priority on helping to reform existing state structures. In 2003 it founded the Hertie School of Governance to institutionalize research and teaching on new forms of statehood and societal governance. | | | | | |
| | | | | | Learning Democracy The most important achievement of all in a democratic society is the freedom to express an opinion. Nevertheless, such freedom can only unfold where education reinforces the freedom of opinion and guarantees freedom of speech. The Hertie Foundation has thus made the subject of free speech one of its most central educational tasks. Yet another pillar of the educational commitment of the Foundation is promoting the integration of immigrant children and juveniles in Germany. In backing this integration, we provide a number of attractive offers – and expect genuine efforts to be made by the immigrants themselves. In setting up berufundfamilie gGmbH, the Foundation seeks to sponsor a change of perspective in personnel policies, where family interests are not considered a hindrance but rather seen as opportunity for the particular company concerned. |
