We in Europe
A nationwide salon series on European identity

We bring diverse perspectives on Europe into the public dialogue and foster exchange on a shared European identity. Through panel discussions, workshops and creative formats, we encourage reflection on what defines Europe and actively involve young people in particular. Funded by Deutsche Postcode Lottery.

Format and objectives

Europe is facing political, social and cultural challenges. At the same time, the question arises as to what unites us as Europeans, and what role shared memory, values, and visions of the future play.

The salon series We in Europe addresses these questions and complements the foundation’s existing European initiatives with a focus on the social debate around European identity. The events are intended to offer orientation and facilitate a constructive exchange of different positions. In 2026/2027, the series will take place in Augsburg, Bremen, Leipzig, Essen, and Berlin.

Each event has its own thematic heading, such as Remembering & Achieving, Working & Connecting or Rebelling & Repairing. In this way, different approaches to European identity are explored. Each salon combines two elements:

1. Youth workshops
Before each evening event, school students develop their own perspectives on Europe in moderated workshops. The results are presented publicly in the evening, for example in the form of photo exhibitions, artistic works, texts, or discussions.

2. Public panel discussions
Afterwards, invited guests from politics, academia, culture, and media discuss key questions relating to European identity. The events are open to the public and will be moderated by the writer and publicist Nora Bossong.

This combination enables an intergenerational dialogue.
